A Free Read: Best Business Practices for Photographers

For those of you looking for specific guidance on a particular point, Amazon has put my book in their AmazonOnlineReader – Best Business Practices for Photographers, so you can read it online to your hearts’ content for free.

You can search for any term or word, browse the table of contents, and generally just browse it. It remains among the top ten books in “Books > Arts & Photography > Photography > Professional” (thank you very much dear readers), and, for under $20, you can buy it at this link – Best Business Practices for Photographers
– and have it laying around your house to enjoy at your leisure.

  1. Hi John,
How do you feel about the work being available for free online? Do you receive compensation from Amazon? I have a (definitely not top 10) 250pg guidebook that I struggle whether to a) release online as PDFs for free b) charge for download or c) continue with the paper model. Or a combination. Just curious if this act of Amazon was done as part of your business model or not.
  2. Kevin —

Thanks for asking. I’ve gotten several e-mails from folks since posting this that they’ve bought the book as a result of being able to browse it online. The retailing of the book is done 100% by my publisher – Thomson/Cengage, so the decision to put it in the AmazonOnlineReader was theirs, not mine. My feeling is, specific to my book, that people will browse it, and if it’s just a piece of advice or tidbit they are looking for, it’s the same as if they had gone to the bookstore, but from the comfort of their own home. Over time, if they’ve done that several times, they might just decide to have it in printed form.

    Cheers,
    John
  3. John,

This is great news for me. I currently have a copy of your book and have recommended it to a fellow photographer that I am looking to partner with. This will allow him to review it online while deciding to buy, and I can keep mine while working out the details of opening the business.

I am the business minded person so I will be doing a lot of the groundwork for the company while he is doing more of the assignments. This means I can tell him to read pages-XXX-XXX before we sit down to discuss. He has a lot to learn on licensing and copyright as I did before I read you book. Thank you for your book, I personally feel that it is as important as a camera for starting a profitable photography business.

    Thank You,
    Adam
  4. Odd. When I just went to take a look there were only a few pages (other than the index and toc) that I could actually browse.
  5. same with me, i went to the link but can only view approx. 5 pages then it jumps to the index. i tried searching different topics within the book and it said the pages weren’t available.
